I'm an Ecoholic: Earth Day 2010

Aaron and I try to be as 'green' as possible and these are the efforts we make:

  • We flush selectively.
  • Most of our batteries are rechargeable.
  • We use towels more than once before washing them.
  • We try to buy products that are manufactured in ways considerate to the environment and made from recycled materials.
  • In public restrooms, we dry our hands naturally by using only time.
  • We recycle, even when it is not convenient.
  • We read/learn about environmental issues.
  • We own some second-hand and re-used clothing.
  • We donate old clothes and other items instead of throwing them away.
  • We reuse bags (both paper and plastic) but use reusable bags 98% of the time.
  • We do not have gasoline bonfires.
  • Aaron commutes on his bicycle whenever possible.
  • We talk to our friends about living green.
  • We encourage our students/co-workers/clients to recycle.
  • We do not leave the water running while doing dishes/brushing our teeth.
  • We do not own any personal motorized watercraft, aircraft, or a hummer.
  • We live in a space smaller than 1000 square feet (per person.)
  • We do load appropriate laundry.
  • We take most showers in under 5 minutes.
  • We do not leave lights on unnecessarily.
  • We use energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Our Subaru Outback is a PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle.)
  • We use a digital camera.
  • We frequently donate and support organizations that protect and preserve our local communities, promote sustainability, fair trade, wildlife protection, and clean living.
  • Every year we buy 5 trees and renew our membership with the Arbor Day Foundation. The trees are planted to sustain a national forest in the United States.
  • We are members of The Audubon Society, The Humane Society (and our membership dues spay/neuter one animal each year), Greenpeace, The Sierra Club, and The Arbor Day Foundation.
  • We use only glass or reusable dinnerware.
All this considered, we have been able to decrease our waste to one 13-gallon-bag every two weeks. What are you doing to protect the environment?

We do all that too- it amazes me that it's not common sense to all people! As for the resused/2nd hand clothes it's the staple of my wardrobe ;) and I am militant about turning lights out!

Not nearly as much as you - however,

- we do recycle
- we walk when and where we can
- we donate clothes and items we no longer use or need
- we also (all) have second hand or used clothing
- we only use 2 - 13 gallon garbage bags every 2 weeks
- we don't use gas (or any other fuel) when we burn in our fire pit
- we have a high efficiency washer/dry and dishwasher
- we also have energy efficient appliances & water filter (our water is awful at our house)
- we mulch the clippings and leaves in our yard when Mike mows
- I love my digital camera
- I am an avid member/donor to the National Wildlife Federation
- I almost always (98% sounds good) use reusable bags at the store
- we also use towels more than once before washing
- our lights get turned off each and every day, at the same time
- all of our light bulbs are energy efficient
- our heat and hot water are on demand - meaning there is no unnecessary running of the systems, and no unnecessary emissions
- we use propane heat, it burns clearer, and cleaner

There is more, I just can't seem to put it all into words.

Happy Earth Day, my Eco-Maniac <3
